Volunteer with YFU
Volunteers, the heart of our organization
Since its beginnings as a volunteer initiative in 1951, YFU has been built on the dedication of people who believe in the power of cultural exchange. As one of the few volunteer-driven international exchange organizations, YFU is proud to keep this spirit alive. Today, more than 12,000 volunteers worldwide bring their passion, time, and expertise to making YFU programs a reality.
Why volunteer with YFU?
Volunteering with YFU is about more than supporting exchange programs - it’s a journey of lifelong learning. We provide training and guidance so that every volunteer feels confident in their role. Along the way, you’ll:
- Grow personally and professionally
- Develop valuable skills in leadership, communication, and intercultural understanding
- Build lifelong bonds with people from all walks of life
- Make a real difference in fostering tolerance, empathy, and global citizenship
And yes - you’ll have a lot of fun doing it!
What can I do as a volunteer with YFU?
Most activities happen at the national level, where volunteers:
- Promote exchange programs in their communities and beyond
- Support the selection and preparation of outbound students and their families
- Serve as contact persons for host families and inbound students
- Mentor and train other volunteers
- Take on leadership roles, including serving on boards
- Step in wherever support is needed
What are international volunteer opportunities?
On the international level, volunteers can join activities such as
- our Youth Empowerment Seminar (YES) or
- the Pool of Representatives.
Who can become a YFU volunteer?
Anyone with motivation and a bit of time to give can get involved. Our volunteers include teenagers and retirees, parents and professionals, educators and students. Many have participated in a YFU program in one shape or form, but previous experience is not required. What matters most is the desire to contribute to YFU’s mission.
